We are promised a God-sized destiny
The word of the Lord came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month.
Haggai 2:20 (ESV)
Dampened dreams
“Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I am about to shake the heavens and the earth, and to overthrow the throne of kingdoms. I am about to destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations, and overthrow the chariots and their riders. And the horses and their riders shall go down, every one by the sword of his brother.

Sermon Notes for 06/02/2013:

Your Disappointments

In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet,

Haggai 2:1 (ESV)

* Droughts create disappointments

“Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say, ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes?

Haggai 2:2-3 (ESV)

* Comparisons create disappointments

The Difference

* What you do matters

Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the Lord. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the Lord. Work . . .

Haggai 2:4 (ESV)

* It’s His presence, not just what you do

Work, for I am with you, declares the Lord of hosts, 5 according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not.

Haggai 2:4b-5 (ESV)

For thus says the Lord of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land. And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the Lord of hosts. The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the Lord of hosts.’”

Haggai 2:6-9 (ESV)

I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the Lord Almighty.

Haggai 2:7 (NIV)

“I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty.

Malachi 3:1 (NIV)

How do you live above disappointments?

* Relax about finding the perfect job.

* Re-center your desires on Him.

Communion Meditation:

“He makes His ministers a flame of fire. Am I ignitable? God deliver me from the dread asbestos of ‘other things.’ Saturate me with the oil of the Spirit that I may be a flame. But flame is transient, often short-lived. Canst thou bear this, my soul – short life? In me there dwells the Spirit of the Great Short-Lived, whose zeal for God’s house consumed Him. ‘Make me Thy Fuel, Flame of God.’”

Jim Elliot, martyred by the Auka Indians

Man appears for a little while to laugh and weep, to work and play, and then to go to make room for those who shall follow him in the never-ending cycle.

A.W. Tozer

Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you.

Augustine

Fear God and work hard.

David Livingstone

Temptations which accompany the working day will be conquered on the basis of the morning breakthrough to God. Decisions, demanded by work, become easier and simpler where they are made not in the fear of men, but only in the sight of God. He wants to give us today the power which we need for our work.

Dietrick Bonhoeffer

To say prayers in a decent, delicate way is not heavy work. But to pray really, to pray till hell feels the ponderous stroke, to pray till the iron gates of difficulty are opened, till the mountains of obstacles are removed, till the mists are exhaled and the clouds are lifted, and the sunshine of a cloudless day brightens-this is hard work, but it is God’s work, and man’s best labor.

E.M. Bounds

Blessing & Sending:

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.

Colossians 3:23-24 (ESV)

And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the Lord of hosts. The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the Lord of hosts.’”
Haggai 2 (ESV)

Sermon Notes for 06/02/2013:
Your Disappointments
In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet,
Haggai 2:1 (ESV)
* Droughts create disappointments
* Comparisons create disappointments
The Difference
* What you do matters

Religion today is not transforming people; rather it is being transformed by the people. You did me no wrong. You know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first, and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. What then has become of your blessedness? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have gouged out your eyes and given them to me. Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth? <itunes:summary>Brothers, I entreat you, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. Sermon Notes for 05/12/2013:
my little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you!
Galatians 4:19 (ESV)
What is “Christ formed in you”?
Paul’s labor pains: our hearts would be pliable to the Father’s heart of love.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,
Romans 12:2 (ESV)
For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
Romans 8:29 (ESV)
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV)
Why is “Christ formed in you” so hard?
Our hearts are swayed by cheap substitutes.
Our hearts are swayed by passion.
Those people are zealous to win you over, but for no good. What they want is to alienate you from us, so that you may have zeal for them. It is fine to be zealous, provided the purpose is good, and to be so always, not just when I am with you.
Galatians 4:17-18 (NIV)
Our hearts are swayed by wanting ‘credit’.
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 1:12-13 (ESV)
And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
Galatians 4:6-7 (ESV)
Communion Meditation:
God always has and always will look for men and women who say to Him, ‘I trust you so much, I’m all in. I want your way not mine. I am willing to live by faith!’
Chip Ingram
Brokenness is the shattering of my self-will – the absolute surrender of my will to the will of God. It is saying “Yes, Lord!” – no resistance, no chafing, no stubbornness – simply submitting myself to His direction and will in my life.
Nancy Leigh-DeMoss
We do not segment our lives, giving some time to God, some to our business or schooling, while keeping parts to ourselves. The idea is to give all of our lives in the presence of God, under the authority of God, and for the honor and glory of God. That is what the Christian life is all about.

How easily do slander, cruel jokes, and lewd speech creep out from my heart! You know that all these are snares to me because of my corruption, and that my greatest snare is myself. I confess that my apprehensions of you are dull, my thoughts shallow, my affections cold. Keep me mindful of my fallen state apart from Christ, but let me never forget my heavenly title in Christ-that I am forgiven, loved, and accepted-or that his grace can deal with every sin; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Gospel is the good news that the eternal Son of God took on humanity, lived a sinless life and died a sinner’s death in our place for our sin. He is now risen and seated in heaven as Lord and Savior, promising freedom from sin’s penalty and power to all who will repent of their sin and trust in Him.
Steve Childers
Blessing & Sending:
that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Ephesians 3:16-19 (ESV)

And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” And he looked around to see who had done it.
Sermon Notes for 03/10/2013

A Willingness to be Vulnerable

And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

Mark 5:34 (ESV)

God’s Willingness to make you Whole

The word “peace” here “means not just freedom from inward anxiety, but that wholeness and completeness of life that comes from being brought into a right relationship with God.”

Kittel, TDNT, Volume II:911

How do you live vulnerably pursuing His Wholeness?

Daily, it’s a fight of faith.

Believe your life is full of value and dignity.

Take the next step to Open Up.

Communion Meditation:

To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket- safe, dark, motionless, airless– it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.

C.S. Lewis

When we were children, we used to think that when we were grown-up we would no longer be vulnerable. But to grow up is to accept vulnerability… To be alive is to be vulnerable.

Madeline L’Engle

I understand now that the vulnerability I’ve always felt is the greatest strength a person can have. You can’t experience life without feeling life. What I’ve learned is that being vulnerable to somebody you love is not a weakness, it’s a strength.

Elizabeth Shue

There can be no vulnerability without risk; there can be no community without vulnerability; there can be no peace, and ultimately no life, without community.

M. Scott Peck

Blessing & Sending:

May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.

And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” And he looked around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
Mark 5:25-34 (ESV)

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 (NIV)
